Deliveroo vs DoorDash
Updated November 2026 · AppBreakup editorial

Deliveroo
London-founded delivery app for restaurant takeaways, groceries and local shops.

DoorDash
US-founded delivery app for restaurant meals, groceries, convenience items and retail.
The short answer
Deliveroo and DoorDash are delivery marketplaces for restaurant meals, groceries and local shops, but they mostly serve different countries. Deliveroo is the London-founded option for the UK, Ireland and its other markets; DoorDash dominates in the US and also covers Canada, Australia and New Zealand. For most people, the choice comes down to which one operates where they live.
Deliveroo or DoorDash: our take
In practice the two work the same way: you order in the app or on the website, a rider or courier brings it and you track the delivery, and you pay menu prices plus delivery and service fees. Deliveroo was founded in London in 2013 to deliver from restaurants that didn't offer delivery themselves, added supermarket grocery delivery in 2018 and now lists pharmacies, pet shops, florists and other local stores. DoorDash started with restaurants and now covers groceries, convenience stores, its own DashMart shops, retail, alcohol in some markets, flowers and pet supplies, and lets you choose pickup instead.
Geography is the main divide. Deliveroo operates in seven countries and has a strong restaurant selection in UK cities. DoorDash has very wide coverage in the US and also runs in Canada, Australia, New Zealand and several other countries, though its reach outside North America and Australia is limited.
The memberships are similar in spirit. Deliveroo Plus Gold costs £4.99 a month and gives free delivery on orders over £10 at restaurants and £15 at shops, while a lower Plus Silver tier is only available through partners such as Amazon Prime. DoorDash's DashPass, sold monthly or yearly with a free trial for new members, gives $0 delivery fees and lower service fees on eligible orders over a store minimum, and its benefits also apply on Caviar, DoorDash's more upscale restaurant app. DashPass is offered in the US and Canada. DoorDash also highlights 24/7 chat and phone support, and Deliveroo has workplace, student and gifting options.
With either, fees and tips make orders noticeably pricier than collecting food yourself. In the UK and Ireland, Deliveroo is the natural choice; in the US and Canada, DoorDash is.

About each app
What is Deliveroo?
Deliveroo is a delivery marketplace founded in London in 2013 to bring food from restaurants that didn't offer delivery themselves. Riders collect orders and bring them to your door, and the app lets you track them. Since 2018 it has added grocery delivery from supermarket partners, and it now also lists pharmacies, pet shops, florists and other local stores. Ordering is free; you pay menu prices plus delivery and service fees. The Deliveroo Plus membership gives free delivery and lower service fees above an order value, and a lower tier is available through partners such as Amazon Prime. There are also offers for workplaces (Deliveroo for Work), students and gifting. Deliveroo operates in a handful of countries rather than worldwide, so it is mainly a choice for people in the UK, Ireland and the other markets it serves. As with every delivery app, fees and minimum order values make it pricier than collecting food yourself.
What is DoorDash?
DoorDash is a delivery marketplace that started with restaurant orders and now also covers groceries, convenience stores and its own DashMart shops, retail, alcohol in some markets, flowers and pet supplies. You order in the app or on the website, a courier (a 'Dasher') brings it, and you can choose pickup instead. Ordering itself is free; you pay menu prices plus delivery and service fees and a tip. The DashPass membership, sold monthly or yearly with a free trial for new members, removes delivery fees and reduces service fees on eligible orders over a minimum, and also works on Caviar, DoorDash's more upscale restaurant app. DoorDash operates in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and several other countries. Like other delivery apps, fees make orders noticeably more expensive than ordering direct, and DashPass savings only kick in at participating stores once you meet their minimum.
