Domo vs Microsoft Power BI
Updated November 2026 · AppBreakup editorial

Domo
Cloud BI platform combining data connectors, ETL, dashboards and low-code data apps.

Microsoft Power BI
Microsoft's business intelligence suite for data modelling, reports and shared dashboards.
The short answer
Power BI suits organisations on Microsoft 365 that want full-featured reports at a published per-user price. Domo suits mid-size and enterprise teams that want connectors, ETL, dashboards and data apps from one vendor with unlimited users. The biggest difference is pricing: Power BI charges per user, while Domo sells credits spent on data storage, refreshes and workflows, with quotes only through sales.
Domo or Microsoft Power BI: our take
Domo bundles the whole analytics chain: 1,000+ prebuilt connectors, drag-and-drop ETL, dashboards, scheduled reports and alerts, a low-code App Studio, embedded analytics, workflow automation and AI agents. Power BI centres on report building in Power BI Desktop, a free Windows app with strong data modelling and the DAX formula language, published to the Power BI service for sharing, refreshes and mobile viewing. It connects to Excel, SQL databases, cloud services and Microsoft Fabric, with Copilot features for drafting reports.
Pricing is where they part most. Power BI Pro starts at $14 per user/month (paid yearly) and Premium Per User is $24 per user/month (paid yearly); the free account covers personal use, but sharing with colleagues needs a paid licence, and capacity and Fabric options can be confusing. Domo has no per-seat fees and unlimited users; contracts buy credits that are consumed as you store data, refresh tables, run workflows or use ML features. Prices come only through sales, credit use can be hard to forecast as data grows, and there is no free plan after the 30-day trial (no card needed).
On platforms, Power BI's serious authoring is Windows-only, while viewing works in the browser and mobile apps. Domo runs entirely in the browser, with mobile apps for dashboards, so Mac users can build in it directly.
Choose Power BI if your organisation already lives in Excel, Teams and Microsoft 365 and wants a predictable per-user cost. Choose Domo if you want one vendor to handle ingestion, transformation and dashboards, need to give many viewers access without per-seat fees, or plan to embed dashboards in a customer-facing product.
Which should you pick?

- You want a free option (Domo is paid only)
- You need Windows, which Domo doesn't list
- Free Desktop authoring app with strong data modelling
- Lower per-user price than most enterprise BI tools
About each app
What is Domo?
Domo is a cloud data platform that bundles the whole analytics chain in one product. It pulls data in from over a thousand sources through prebuilt connectors, lets analysts clean and join it with drag-and-drop ETL, and turns the result into dashboards, scheduled reports and alerts. On top of that it offers a low-code App Studio for building data apps, embedded analytics for putting dashboards inside your own product, workflow automation and AI agents. It runs in the browser with mobile apps for viewing dashboards. Domo's pricing is unusual for BI: instead of charging per seat, contracts buy credits that are spent when you store data, refresh tables, run workflows or use ML features, and every customer gets unlimited users. A 30-day free trial is available, but there is no permanent free plan and paid prices are only given through sales. It mainly suits mid-sized and large organisations that want one vendor rather than a stitched-together data stack.
What is Microsoft Power BI?
Power BI is Microsoft's business intelligence platform and the most common choice in organisations already using Microsoft 365. Reports are built in Power BI Desktop, a free Windows app with data modelling, a formula language (DAX) and a wide range of visuals, then published to the Power BI service in the browser, where teams share dashboards, set up refreshes and view reports on mobile apps. It connects to Excel, SQL databases, cloud services and Microsoft Fabric, and recent versions include Copilot features for drafting reports. The free account covers personal use, while sharing reports with colleagues needs a Pro or Premium Per User licence, priced per user per month, with capacity-based options for large deployments. Its main drawbacks are that serious authoring is Windows-only and the licensing structure, especially around Fabric capacity, can be confusing. For teams living in Excel and Teams it is often the cheapest full-featured option.
