The short answer

Data Studio (Looker Studio) is Google's free report builder, popular with marketers for dashboards on Analytics, Ads and Sheets data. Qlik Sense, now sold as Qlik Cloud Analytics, is a paid enterprise analytics platform built around an associative engine and governance. Pick Data Studio for quick, shareable reports at little or no cost; pick Qlik for governed, exploratory analytics across a larger organisation.

Data Studio (Looker Studio) or Qlik Sense: our take

Data Studio is a browser tool where you connect sources, drag charts, tables and filters onto a canvas, and share the report like a Google Doc. It has native connectors for Google Analytics, Ads, Sheets and BigQuery and 1,300+ community connectors, though many of those are run by outside companies that charge their own fees. Reports can be edited together in real time and embedded on any web page. Qlik Sense centres on its associative engine: clicking a value in one chart filters every other chart and greys out unrelated data, which helps you find connections a fixed query would miss. Analysts script data loads and transformations, and newer releases add conversational AI, predictive analytics, anomaly detection and automations, with Qlik's own data integration tools feeding it.

The pricing gap is large. Data Studio's self-service tier costs nothing, and a Pro tier at $9 per user per project/month adds team content management, admin controls and Google Cloud support. Qlik Cloud Analytics starts from $300/month for 10 users on the Starter plan and from $825/month on Standard, both billed annually, with a free trial. Qlik's packaging and product names have also changed several times.

Both run in the browser. Data Studio is quick to learn but can get slow on large or blended datasets, and its data modelling is basic. Qlik scales and governs well for big deployments, but its load scripting language takes time to learn.

Choose Data Studio if you're a marketer, agency or small team reporting on Google data and want free, easy sharing and embedding. Choose Qlik Sense if you're a mid-size or large organisation that needs governance, a proper data model and free-form exploration, and has the budget and analysts to support it.

About each app

What is Data Studio (Looker Studio)?

Data Studio, which Google called Looker Studio for several years, is a free web app for building reports and dashboards. You connect it to Google sources such as Analytics, Ads, Sheets and BigQuery, or to databases and hundreds of other services through community connectors, then drag charts, tables and filters onto a canvas. Reports can be shared like a Google Doc, edited together in real time and embedded on web pages, so it is popular with marketers and agencies for client reporting. The self-service version costs nothing. A paid Pro tier, billed per user and project, adds team content management, admin controls and support through Google Cloud. It is quick to learn and easy to share, but large datasets can make reports slow, data modelling is basic compared with Power BI, and many third-party connectors are run by outside companies that charge their own fees.

What is Qlik Sense?

Qlik Sense is Qlik's self-service analytics product, now offered mainly as Qlik Cloud Analytics. Its signature is the associative engine: when you click a value in any chart, every other chart filters to match and greys out unrelated data, which makes it easy to spot connections that a fixed query would miss. Users build interactive apps and dashboards, analysts script data loads and transformations, and newer releases add conversational AI, predictive analytics, anomaly detection and automations. Qlik also sells data integration tools that feed the analytics side. It targets mid-size and large organisations that need governance and scale, and it is priced accordingly: cloud plans start at a monthly fee for a small team and scale with data volume, with a free trial to start. The load scripting language takes time to learn, and the pricing puts it out of reach for very small teams compared with Power BI or free tools.
