About Amazon SageMaker AI

Amazon SageMaker AI is the machine learning service inside AWS. It covers the whole model lifecycle: notebooks and code editors for data scientists, managed training jobs on CPU and GPU instances, hyperparameter tuning, pipelines for repeatable workflows, a model registry and hosted endpoints for inference. Autopilot, now part of SageMaker Canvas, runs an AutoML search over your tabular data and shows a leaderboard of candidate models, so analysts can get a working model without writing training code. Managed MLflow is available for experiment tracking. It suits teams already on AWS that want their models next to their data in S3 and their security in IAM, rather than a separate vendor platform. Pricing is pay-as-you-go by instance hours, storage and requests, with a limited free tier for the first months, which makes small experiments cheap but means large training and always-on endpoints need careful cost control. It runs only in AWS regions and is used through the AWS console, SDKs and APIs.

Best for: Data science teams already on AWS who want managed training, AutoML and hosting next to their data..

Pros and cons

What works

  • Covers notebooks, training, tuning, pipelines and hosting in one service
  • AutoML through Autopilot in Canvas, with a model leaderboard
  • Pay only for compute and storage used, with no minimum fee
  • Tight integration with S3, IAM and other AWS services

Why people leave

  • Only runs on AWS, so it ties your ML stack to one cloud
  • Usage-based billing across many components is hard to predict
  • Large surface area with a steep learning curve for newcomers
