About Argo Workflows
Argo Workflows is an open-source workflow engine that runs on Kubernetes and is part of the Argo project, a graduated Cloud Native Computing Foundation project alongside Argo CD. Workflows are defined as Kubernetes custom resources in YAML, and every step runs in its own container, so steps can be written in any language. You model jobs as a sequence of steps or as a DAG of dependencies, with loops, conditionals, retries, timeouts, artifacts passed between steps and cron schedules. Teams use it for machine learning pipelines, batch data processing, infrastructure automation and CI/CD, and it sits underneath Kubeflow Pipelines and can back Metaflow. A web UI shows running workflows and logs, and the Hera SDK lets Python users define workflows in code instead of YAML. It's free under the Apache 2.0 licence and you run it on your own cluster; the project itself doesn't offer a hosted service.
Best for: Platform teams already on Kubernetes who want container-native batch and ML pipelines..
Pros and cons
What works
- Free, Apache 2.0 licensed CNCF project
- Any language works, since each step is a container
- Handles large parallel jobs on Kubernetes
- Python users can define workflows with Hera
Why people leave
- Requires a Kubernetes cluster
- YAML definitions get verbose for data engineers used to Python
- No hosted version from the project itself
