About Flyte
Flyte is an open-source workflow orchestrator for data processing, machine learning and AI workloads, hosted under the Linux Foundation AI & Data. Pipelines are written as ordinary Python functions with typed inputs and outputs, and Flyte runs them as containerized tasks on Kubernetes, caching results, retrying failed steps and resuming without rerunning work that already succeeded. Flyte 2 adds dynamic control flow, so branches and loops are decided at runtime, which suits agent loops and other pipelines that aren't a fixed DAG. It integrates with Spark, Ray, PyTorch, Snowflake, BigQuery and experiment trackers, and can serve models and dashboards next to pipelines. SDKs exist for Python plus TypeScript, Rust and Go. The project is free under the Apache 2.0 licence and self-hosted on your own cluster; Union.ai, started by Flyte's creators, sells a managed enterprise platform. Expect a heavier setup than Prefect if you don't already run Kubernetes.
Best for: ML and data teams on Kubernetes who want typed, reproducible Python pipelines..
Pros and cons
What works
- Free and Apache 2.0 licensed
- Typed task inputs and outputs catch errors early
- Caching and retries resume from the failed step
- Managed option through Union.ai
Why people leave
- Needs a Kubernetes cluster for production use
- Flyte 2 changes the SDK, so Flyte 1 code needs migrating
- Smaller community than Airflow
