About Prefect

Prefect is a workflow orchestrator for data, machine learning and AI agent pipelines written in Python. Instead of learning a new DAG syntax, you add a decorator to ordinary Python functions and Prefect handles scheduling, retries, caching, logging and recovery from failures. Workflows can run on your own machines, Kubernetes, ECS, or Prefect's serverless compute, while the Prefect Cloud dashboard shows runs, sends alerts on failures or late runs, and manages deployments. The framework is open source under Apache 2.0 and can be self-hosted with its own server and UI. Prefect Cloud has a free Hobby tier for a couple of users and a few deployments, then paid plans that add more users, deployments, single sign-on and audit logs. Compared with Airflow, it feels lighter for Python developers and is easier to test locally, but its ecosystem of ready-made integrations is smaller. The company also maintains FastMCP, a popular framework for building MCP servers.

Best for: Python teams who want orchestration without rewriting code into a separate DAG framework.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Plain Python with a decorator, little new to learn
  • Free hosted Hobby tier and a self-hostable open source server
  • Runs on your own compute, Kubernetes or serverless

Why people leave

  • Free cloud tier is limited to 2 users and 5 deployments
  • Smaller integration ecosystem than Airflow
  • Paid plans jump quickly from a flat fee to per-user pricing
