About Control-M

Control-M is BMC Software's workload automation and workflow orchestration platform, used by large companies to schedule and monitor batch jobs, data pipelines, file transfers and application workflows across mainframes, on-premises servers and multiple clouds. Teams design workflows visually or define them as code, connect them to CI/CD through GitOps, and track service-level agreements with predictive monitoring so they hear about late jobs before a deadline is missed. A large integration catalogue covers ERP systems like SAP, databases, cloud services, data tools and container platforms, and it includes managed file transfer. Control-M runs as a SaaS service or on your own infrastructure, and hybrid setups are supported. Pricing is aimed at enterprises: a SaaS starter pack is billed annually, and larger deployments are quoted based on execution volume and support needs. It suits operations teams in banks, insurers and other big organisations; small data teams will usually find open-source orchestrators cheaper and lighter.

Best for: Large enterprises orchestrating batch jobs and data pipelines across mainframe, on-prem and cloud.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Covers mainframe, on-premises and multi-cloud workloads from one console

  • Available as SaaS, on-premises or a hybrid of both

Why people leave

  • Enterprise pricing; the entry SaaS pack costs thousands of dollars a month
  • Custom enterprise pricing requires talking to sales
  • Heavy for small teams that only need to schedule a few pipelines
