About Authelia

Authelia is an open-source authentication and authorization server that sits next to a reverse proxy such as Traefik, NGINX, Caddy or HAProxy and protects the apps behind it. When a request arrives, the proxy asks Authelia whether the user is logged in and allowed through; if not, the user goes to Authelia's portal to sign in with a password plus TOTP, WebAuthn security keys, passkeys or push notifications. It is also a certified OpenID Connect provider, so apps that support OIDC can use it directly. Users come from a YAML file or an LDAP directory, and access rules are written in configuration. Written in Go, it ships as a very small container with modest memory use, which makes it popular for homelabs and small servers. There is no web admin console or user self-registration, so it suits people comfortable editing config files, and larger organisations may prefer a fuller identity platform.

Best for: Homelab and small-server users who want SSO and 2FA in front of self-hosted apps.
