About Zitadel

Zitadel is an identity and access management platform written in Go that you can self-host or use as Zitadel Cloud. It was designed for B2B and multi-tenant products from the start: organisations, delegated administration and per-tenant identity providers are core concepts rather than add-ons. It supports OpenID Connect, OAuth 2.0 and SAML, passkeys and other MFA, social and enterprise login, role-based access control, actions for custom logic, and an event-sourced audit trail of every change. APIs and SDKs cover common languages, and a hosted login UI can be customised or replaced. The code is open source under AGPL-3.0. The cloud offers a free tier and a paid Pro plan with data residency choices in several regions, while enterprise support is sold separately for self-hosters. Compared with Keycloak it feels more modern and API-driven, though its ecosystem and pool of experienced operators is smaller.

Best for: B2B SaaS teams that want multi-tenant identity with the option to self-host.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Multi-tenancy and delegated admin built into the core
  • Choice of managed cloud or self-hosting the same code
  • Full audit trail from its event-sourced design

Why people leave

  • AGPL licence may need legal review for some companies
  • Smaller community than Keycloak
  • Free cloud tier is limited in daily active users
