About SuperTokens

SuperTokens is an open-source alternative to Auth0, Firebase Auth and Cognito. It is split into a core service that stores users and sessions, back-end SDKs that run inside your API, and front-end SDKs with prebuilt, customisable login UI. Recipes cover email and password, passwordless magic links and OTP, social login, sessions with rotating refresh tokens, MFA, multi-tenancy and user roles. Because the SDK runs in your own back end, you can override almost any step of a flow in code. Self-hosting the open-source features is free with no user cap; the managed cloud charges per monthly active user above a free allowance, and some features such as MFA and account linking are paid add-ons in either mode. It is backed by Y Combinator. SuperTokens suits teams who want control and predictable costs, though it supports fewer back-end languages than the big hosted providers.

Best for: Developers who want self-hostable auth with prebuilt UI and code-level control.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Self-hosted open-source features are free without user limits
  • Prebuilt login UI plus overrides for every step
  • Simple per-user pricing on the managed cloud

Why people leave

  • Back-end SDKs cover fewer languages than larger rivals
  • Some features like MFA are paid add-ons even when self-hosted
  • You run the core service yourself when self-hosting
