About Auth.js (NextAuth.js)

Auth.js, known for years as NextAuth.js, is an open-source library that adds sign-in to JavaScript web apps. It became the default choice for Next.js projects thanks to built-in support for dozens of OAuth providers, magic-link email sign-in, credentials and optional WebAuthn, with sessions stored in encrypted cookies or a database through adapters for Prisma, Drizzle, Supabase, Firebase and others. Framework packages extend it to SvelteKit, Qwik and Express. It is ISC licensed, completely free and runs inside your own app. The project is now part of Better Auth, and its documentation offers a migration guide to Better Auth, so new projects are generally better served there while existing Auth.js apps keep working. Its limitations have always been around features beyond basic sign-in: there is no built-in MFA, organisations or admin UI, and credentials-based login is deliberately limited.

Best for: Existing Next.js apps that already rely on NextAuth for OAuth sign-in.
