About CockroachDB

CockroachDB is a distributed SQL database that speaks the Postgres wire protocol and spreads data across many nodes, availability zones and regions while keeping transactions strongly consistent. It is designed for systems that cannot afford downtime or need data to live in particular regions, such as payments, identity and global SaaS products. CockroachDB Cloud runs it for you in several tiers, from a serverless-style Basic tier to Standard and Advanced dedicated clusters, on AWS, Google Cloud or Azure; the database can also be self-hosted under an enterprise licence. Pricing on the cloud is usage-based, mostly by vCPU-hour and storage, and new organisations get a 30-day trial with credits. Postgres compatibility is broad but not complete, so some extensions and features are missing, and distributed writes carry more latency than a single-node database. It is overkill for small apps, but a strong fit when resilience and multi-region data placement are requirements.

Best for: Teams running critical, multi-region workloads that need consistent SQL and high availability.

Pros and cons
