About Coderbyte

Coderbyte started as a place for developers to practise coding problems and prepare for job interviews, and that side still exists: a library of algorithm, front-end, back-end and database challenges solved in a browser editor, with automated grading, Big-O feedback, other users' solutions to compare against, and interview kits for topics such as algorithms and React. Today most of the company's focus is on employers. Its screening product lets hiring teams send take-home assessments and run live interviews from a large question bank, with cheating checks such as plagiarism, tab-switch and webcam monitoring, and integrations with common applicant tracking systems. For developers it is a lighter alternative to the big practice sites; for companies it competes with HackerRank and Codility. Employer plans are sold per year with unlimited candidates or monthly with a set number of invites, and there is a free trial. Everything runs in the browser.

Best for: Developers wanting interview-style practice, and small hiring teams that want flat-priced coding assessments..

Pros and cons

What works

  • Practice challenges come with automated grading and Big-O feedback
  • Employer plan with unlimited candidates at a published yearly price
  • Native integrations with Greenhouse, Lever, Workday and other ATSs
  • Cheating detection including plagiarism, paste and webcam checks

Why people leave

  • The site now centres on employers, so the practice side gets less attention
  • Practice library is far smaller than LeetCode's
  • SSO, API and branding cost extra on top of the yearly plan
