About HackerRank

HackerRank is a technical hiring platform that companies use to screen and interview software engineers and other technical candidates. Recruiters send take-home coding assessments from a large question library, run live pair-programming interviews in a shared editor, and review scored reports before deciding who moves on. Newer features lean into AI: candidates can work in a realistic codebase with AI assistants, an AI interviewer called Chakra can run early rounds, and plagiarism detection flags copied or tool-generated answers. It connects to applicant tracking systems such as Greenhouse so invites and scores stay in the hiring pipeline. On the other side sits a large free developer community where people practise problems and take certifications, which also gives customers a pool of candidates. Business plans are sold per year with a free trial; larger teams buy through sales. It runs entirely in the browser.

Best for: Companies hiring many engineers that want standard coding screens plus live interviews in one tool.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Large library of coding questions and role-based certified assessments
  • Covers both take-home screening and live coding interviews
  • Integrates with common applicant tracking systems such as Greenhouse
  • Big developer community that already knows the format

Why people leave

  • Pricing page needs JavaScript and higher tiers are quote-only
  • Puzzle-style tests are often criticised by candidates as unlike real work
  • Focused on technical roles; little for non-technical hiring
