About Eagle

Eagle is a local asset manager built for designers, illustrators and other visual creatives. It keeps reference images, screenshots, design files, fonts, audio and video in one library on your computer, where you can sort them with folders, tags, ratings and smart folders that file things automatically by name, colour or format. A browser extension for Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox saves images from web pages by drag and drop or in batches, and search covers keywords, colour and multiple filters. Version 4 adds AI features: visual and semantic search, plus rules that tag, rename and file new assets for you, using AI models you configure. Previews open without double-clicking, and there's a duplicate finder, image annotation and a plugin API. Eagle runs on Windows and macOS. It's sold as a one-time licence with lifetime updates rather than a subscription, after a 30-day free trial. Libraries live on your own disk, so syncing between machines depends on your cloud folder of choice.

Best for: Designers and artists who collect lots of visual references and want them tagged and searchable offline..

Pros and cons

What works

  • One-time purchase with lifetime updates, no subscription
  • Browser extension makes saving images from the web quick
  • Search by colour, tags, filters and, in version 4, by meaning
  • Handles fonts, audio, video and design files, not only images

Why people leave

  • No Linux version
  • No built-in cloud sync or team sharing service; libraries sit on local disk
  • Paid after the 30-day trial, while digiKam is free
