About Flickr

Flickr has been a home for photographers since 2004 and is now owned by SmugMug. It combines photo hosting with a community: groups, comments, faves, the Explore page of popular images, and detailed camera and licence information, including Creative Commons options. Flickr Pro adds unlimited full-resolution storage, ad-free browsing, advanced stats and auto-upload from phones and computers. Free accounts are capped at a fixed number of public photos and videos, a limit introduced in 2019 that led to deletions for accounts over it. It runs on the web with iOS and Android apps and a desktop uploader. Flickr is less suited to private family backup than Google Photos or iCloud, since organisation and search are built around sharing, but for photographers who want their work seen and kept in original quality it remains a solid choice.

Best for: Hobbyist and professional photographers who want hosting plus a community.
