About Piwigo
Piwigo is an open-source photo gallery and digital asset management application that has been developed since 2002. It organises images into albums and sub-albums with tags, metadata and fine-grained permissions for users and groups, which makes it popular with photographers, associations, schools and organisations that need to share large collections with different audiences. A big library of plugins and themes extends it, and there are mobile apps for iOS and Android. You can install it for free on your own PHP web server, or pay for Piwigo.com, the hosted version, which is billed annually per plan with storage add-ons and a free trial. Compared with Google Photos-style apps it is more of a gallery and archive than an automatic phone backup, and the default look is functional rather than modern.
Best for: Organisations and photographers sharing large, permission-controlled collections.
