About Ghostery

Ghostery started as a tool for seeing which companies track you on a page and is now a full ad and tracker blocker. It removes ads (including YouTube ads), blocks trackers, and with its Never-Consent feature automatically rejects tracking cookies and dismisses cookie pop-ups. A tracker panel shows what was found on each site, drawing on Ghostery's WhoTracks.Me database. It is free and open source under GPL-3.0, available for Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, Opera and Brave, and on Safari for iPhone and iPad plus Firefox and Edge on Android. Ghostery is funded by optional contributions and other privacy products. It is a good middle ground between simple blockers and uBlock Origin: less configurable than uBO, but with cookie handling and tracker insights included out of the box. Older versions were controversial for monetising data, a model the company abandoned years ago.

Best for: People who want ads, trackers and cookie pop-ups handled automatically.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Rejects cookie banners automatically
  • Shows which trackers each site uses
  • Open source and free on all major browsers

Why people leave

  • Fewer custom filtering options than uBlock Origin
  • Not available in Chrome on Android
  • Past data-monetisation history still worries some users
