About GitHub Copilot

GitHub Copilot is the most widely deployed AI coding assistant, built by GitHub and available as extensions for VS Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains IDEs, Xcode, Eclipse and Neovim, plus a terminal CLI and a desktop app. It started as inline autocomplete and now covers chat, an agent mode that edits several files and runs commands, automated pull request review, and a cloud coding agent you can assign GitHub issues to; it opens a pull request when it is done. Because it lives inside GitHub, it can use repository, issue and Actions context without extra setup, and organisations get policy controls, audit logs and IP indemnity. You can pick between models from several labs rather than one vendor's. There is a free plan with limited chat and agent usage; paid individual plans and per-seat Business and Enterprise plans raise the limits, with heavier agent use billed through usage-based AI credits. Verified students, teachers and maintainers of popular open-source projects can get it free.

Best for: Developers and companies already on GitHub who want one assistant across IDE, terminal and pull requests.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Works in almost every major IDE plus a CLI and desktop app
  • Assign issues to a cloud agent that opens pull requests

  • Enterprise policy, audit and indemnity controls

Why people leave

  • Usage-based AI credits make heavy agent use hard to predict
  • Best features assume your code is hosted on GitHub
  • Free plan limits run out quickly with agent mode
