About GnuCash

GnuCash is a long-running free desktop accounting program licensed under the GNU GPL. It uses proper double-entry bookkeeping and handles bank and credit accounts, investments, scheduled transactions, budgets and reports, plus small-business features such as customers, vendors, invoices and bills. Data is stored in a local file or a SQL database, and you can import QIF, OFX and CSV files. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, with a Flatpak build available. There is no subscription and no cloud service: backups, multi-user access and syncing are up to you. The interface looks dated and assumes some accounting knowledge, and there are no bank feeds in most countries, no mobile app and limited tax-specific features. For an owner comfortable with bookkeeping who wants free software that will keep working for years, it remains a solid choice.

Best for: Bookkeeping-literate owners who want free desktop accounting and full control of their data.
