About Lutris
Lutris is an open-source game manager for Linux that tries to put every game you own in one library, whatever it needs to run. It connects to Steam, GOG, the Epic Games Store and Humble Bundle, and uses community-written install scripts to set up Windows games under Wine, older titles in DOSBox or ScummVM, and console games through emulators, downloading the right runner versions for you. Once installed, each game has its own settings for the Wine version, DXVK and other tweaks. The scripts are the big draw for hard-to-run or abandoned games, though their quality varies because anyone can submit one. Lutris is free under the GPLv3, funded through donations, and runs only on Linux. Its interface is plainer than Heroic's, and the Epic and GOG integrations occasionally break when the stores change.
Best for: Linux gamers with a mixed library of store, retro and hard-to-run Windows games.
Pros and cons
What works
- Community install scripts handle many tricky Windows and retro games
- One library across Steam, GOG, Epic, Humble and emulators
- Per-game control over Wine, DXVK and other runners
- Free and open source
Why people leave
- Linux only
- Install scripts vary in quality and can go stale
- Interface feels dated and has more settings than casual players need
