About Mathesar

Mathesar is a free, open-source web app that puts a spreadsheet-style interface on top of a PostgreSQL database. Rather than storing data in its own format, it works directly with real Postgres tables, so anything you build is also usable by developers, reporting tools and other software. Non-technical colleagues can browse and edit records, follow foreign-key relationships, filter and group data, import CSVs, and build saved queries through a visual query builder, while access control uses Postgres's own roles and permissions. It is developed by a nonprofit foundation and funded through donations and grants, with no commercial edition holding back features. You install it yourself, typically with Docker, and connect it to new or existing databases; a hosted cloud trial is also offered. It runs in the browser. It suits teams that already rely on Postgres and want a friendlier front end, but it lacks the automations, forms and app-building features of Airtable-style products.

Best for: Teams with PostgreSQL data that want a spreadsheet-like UI for non-developers.
