About MicroStation
MicroStation is Bentley Systems' general-purpose CAD application, used mainly for infrastructure work: roads, rail, bridges, utilities, plants and large civil projects. It handles precise 2D drafting and 3D modelling, and is built around Bentley's own DGN file format while also referencing and importing DWG, DXF and IFC files, so it can sit alongside AutoCAD-based deliverables. It is strong at very large models and project references, and brings in point clouds, reality meshes, terrain and geospatial data for designing in real-world context. It also underpins many of Bentley's discipline-specific products (OpenRoads, OpenBuildings and others) and can publish to Bentley's iTwin digital-twin platform. Automation is available through a Python API. MicroStation is sold as an annual subscription with a free trial and runs on Windows only. It's best for engineering firms, departments of transportation and utilities that work in the Bentley ecosystem or need infrastructure-scale models; small design studios will usually find AutoCAD-compatible tools simpler and cheaper.
Best for: Infrastructure engineers and agencies working with DGN files and the Bentley ecosystem.
Pros and cons
What works
- Handles very large infrastructure models and many references well
- Works with DWG, DXF and IFC alongside its native DGN format
- Point cloud, reality mesh and geospatial context built in
- Python API for automating drafting and modelling tasks
Why people leave
- Windows only
- Subscription-only pricing aimed at firms rather than individuals
- DGN-centred workflows are less common outside infrastructure and government
