About Moose

Moose is a GTK 4 and libadwaita desktop app for chatting with AI models on Linux. It can install, update and repair its own copy of Ollama for local models, connect to an Ollama instance you already run, or use your own API keys for cloud providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, Mistral, Groq and DeepSeek, plus any service that speaks the common chat APIs. Chats, drafts and a searchable document library stay on your computer, and you can attach images, PDFs, text and code. A Local Only mode keeps all inference on the managed Ollama install, and remote connections ask before sharing messages or files. It is free software under the GPL, written in Rust and distributed through Flathub. It is a young project, so it suits Linux desktop users who want a tidy GNOME-style front end more than people who need team features or other operating systems.

Best for: Linux desktop users who want one native app for local Ollama models and cloud AI keys.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Installs and maintains Ollama for you, so local models work without terminal setup
  • Mixes local models and many cloud providers in one app using your own keys
  • Local Only mode and per-request permission before anything leaves the machine
  • Native GNOME look and feel, free under the GPL

Why people leave

  • Linux only, distributed mainly as a Flatpak
  • Early-stage project (0.x releases) with a small user base
  • No shared workspaces or multi-user server mode
