About Niva Bupa

Niva Bupa is a standalone health insurance company in India, promoted by the UK healthcare group Bupa and listed on Indian stock exchanges. It sells individual, family floater, senior citizen, critical illness, personal accident and international travel policies, plus group cover for employers. Policies can be bought and renewed on its website, and its health app lets customers find cashless network hospitals, file and track claims, download premium certificates and book teleconsultations. Its main selling points are a large cashless hospital network and fast pre-authorisation for cashless claims. Premiums depend on age, city, sum insured and plan, and the site quotes them online. It only covers people in India (with plans for NRIs), so it is not an option for residents elsewhere. As with any insurer, waiting periods, co-payments and exclusions vary by plan and should be read before buying.

Best for: Indian families and individuals wanting standalone health cover with a large cashless hospital network.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Large cashless network of 19,000+ hospitals across India
  • App handles claims, hospital search and teleconsultations
  • Wide range of plans, from senior citizen cover to travel insurance

Why people leave

  • Only for people in India (and NRIs buying Indian cover)
  • Some reimbursement claims carry a 20% co-payment
  • Waiting periods and exclusions differ by plan and take care to compare
