About OpenSCAD
OpenSCAD takes a different approach from almost every other modeler: instead of drawing interactively, you write a script that describes your object using primitives, transformations and constructive solid geometry operations such as union, difference and intersection, and the program renders the result. That makes models fully parametric and reproducible, easy to version in Git and simple to customise by changing variables, which is why it is popular for 3D-printable parts, enclosures and the customisable designs shared on sites like Printables and Thingiverse. It is not suited to organic shapes or artistic modeling, and complex designs can take a while to render, though newer development builds include a much faster geometry engine. OpenSCAD is free software under the GPL version 2 and runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, with a large community library of modules.
Best for: Programmers and makers designing parametric parts for 3D printing.

- Free and open source
- Great for customisable 3D-printable parts
Why people leave
- No interactive modeling
- Unsuitable for organic or artistic shapes
- Complex models can render slowly in stable releases
