About PopSQL

PopSQL is a SQL editor built around teamwork rather than a single analyst's laptop. Queries live in shared folders that everyone on the team can search, comment on and roll back through version history, and database credentials can be shared so new teammates don't have to hunt for them. Results turn into charts and simple dashboards in a few clicks, and queries or dashboards can be scheduled and pushed to Slack. It connects to the usual warehouses and databases, including PostgreSQL, MySQL, Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift, SQL Server and ClickHouse, and adds dbt Core and Git sync on higher tiers. It runs in the browser or as a desktop app for reaching databases on a private network. Pricing is per editor with free viewers, and a small free plan caps the number of saved queries and connections. PopSQL is now owned by TigerData (formerly Timescale), the company behind TimescaleDB. It suits analytics teams that want a lighter shared workspace than a full BI suite.

Best for: Data and analytics teams that want shared, versioned SQL queries with quick charts.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Shared folders, comments and version history make queries a team asset
  • Viewers are free, so only people who write queries are billed
  • Built-in charts, dashboards and scheduled Slack updates
  • Works in the browser or as a desktop app

Why people leave

  • Free plan is limited to 10 queries and 2 connections
  • Git integration and unlimited dashboards need the Business plan or higher
  • Closed source with no self-hosted edition
