About Prosper
Prosper launched in 2005 as the first peer-to-peer lending platform in the US and now runs an online marketplace for unsecured personal loans, funded through its partner bank and investors. Borrowers check their rate without affecting their credit score, then choose a loan from $2,000 to $50,000 with a term of two to six years; funds can arrive as soon as the next business day and there is never a prepayment penalty. Rates depend on credit and include an origination fee, with the top of the APR range in the mid-30s. Beyond personal loans, Prosper offers home equity lines of credit, the Prosper Card credit card and joint applications. It has funded tens of billions of dollars in personal loans and says it has helped millions of customers. Prosper suits US borrowers consolidating debt or covering a one-off expense who want a fixed payment schedule; borrowers with excellent credit may find lower rates at banks or credit unions.
Best for: US borrowers who want a fixed-rate personal loan for debt consolidation or a one-off expense.
