About Proton Docs

Proton Docs, along with its sibling Proton Sheets, is Proton's answer to Google Docs and Sheets for people who don't want their files readable by their provider. Documents live in Proton Drive and are end-to-end encrypted, yet several people can edit at once, see each other's cursors, leave comments and suggest changes. Sheets lets you import Excel or Google Sheets files and work on them under the same encryption. Both work in the browser and through Proton Drive's apps. They come with any Proton account: the free plan includes 5 GB of storage, and paid Drive or bundle plans add storage and other Proton services such as Mail, VPN and Pass. Proton is based in Switzerland. The editors are younger and simpler than Google's or Microsoft's, with fewer formatting options, templates and add-ons, and features like offline editing and advanced spreadsheet functions are still catching up.

Best for: Privacy-minded people who want Google Docs-style collaboration with encryption.
