About ScyllaDB

ScyllaDB is a wide-column NoSQL database written in C++ that implements the Apache Cassandra query language and drivers, plus a DynamoDB-compatible API called Alternator. Its shard-per-core design aims to squeeze more throughput out of each server, so the vendor's case studies (Discord among them) describe replacing large Cassandra clusters with far fewer nodes. It is aimed at teams with latency-sensitive, high-volume workloads such as feature stores, messaging and real-time analytics, and it has added vector search for AI use cases. ScyllaDB is source-available rather than open source: the self-managed edition is free up to a storage and vCPU limit across your clusters, and larger deployments need a paid licence. ScyllaDB X Cloud is the fully managed service on AWS and Google Cloud, with a free trial. It runs on Linux servers, in Kubernetes or as the hosted service.

Best for: Teams running Cassandra or DynamoDB workloads who want lower latency and fewer servers.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Drop-in CQL and DynamoDB API compatibility
  • Fewer nodes needed for the same load, per vendor benchmarks
  • Managed cloud option on AWS and Google Cloud
  • Free self-managed tier for smaller clusters

Why people leave

  • Source-available licence, no longer open source
  • Free self-managed use is capped by storage and vCPUs
  • Same query-first data modelling limits as Cassandra
