About Stoat
Stoat is an open-source community chat platform that was called Revolt until it was renamed in October 2025. It follows Discord's model of servers, text channels, voice chat, roles and permissions, and adds things Discord charges for, such as custom emoji, profile banners and animated avatars, at no cost. It has no ads or data mining, is built in Europe, and says it answers to its users rather than investors. You can use the official hosted service through web, Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS apps, or self-host the server yourself, and there is a public API for bots and custom clients. The project is younger and smaller than Discord, so some features and apps are still maturing. It suits gaming groups and online communities that want a privacy-respecting, open alternative to Discord.
Best for: Gaming groups and communities that want an open, ad-free alternative to Discord.
