About Unsloth

Unsloth started as an open-source library for fine-tuning large language models with less GPU memory, and it now ships a local interface (Unsloth Studio, packaged as the Unsloth Desktop app) that covers both chatting with models and training them. You can download GGUF, MLX and diffusion models, chat with them, run tool calls and code in a sandbox, build training datasets from PDFs or CSVs, fine-tune with LoRA or full training, then export the result for other runtimes such as Ollama or llama.cpp. It can also serve a model through an OpenAI-compatible API, so coding agents and editors can use a local model. The project says it runs fully offline and does not collect usage telemetry. It suits people who want more than a chat window: researchers and developers who want to customise a model, not just run it. The core library is Apache 2.0 and the Studio UI is AGPL-3.0; paid Pro and Enterprise tiers add multi-GPU and multi-node training. It runs on macOS, Windows and Linux, and training works best on an NVIDIA GPU.

Best for: Developers and researchers who want to both run and fine-tune open models locally.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Training and chat in one local app, with no-code fine-tuning presets
  • Uses far less VRAM for fine-tuning than standard training setups
  • Exports to GGUF and other formats for Ollama, llama.cpp and vLLM
  • Serves models through an OpenAI-compatible API for agents and editors

Why people leave

  • The Studio UI is AGPL-3.0, which matters if you embed it in a product
  • Multi-GPU and multi-node training sit in paid tiers
  • More complex than a chat-only app like LM Studio if you only want to chat
