About Veeam

Veeam makes backup and recovery software used mostly by IT teams. Its main on-premises product, Veeam Backup & Replication (sold as part of Veeam Data Platform), backs up and restores VMware, Hyper-V and Proxmox virtual machines, Windows and Linux servers, NAS shares and cloud workloads, with features such as instant VM recovery, immutable backups and malware scanning before restores. Veeam also sells SaaS backup for Microsoft 365, Entra ID and Salesforce, Kubernetes backup through Kasten, and its own cloud storage for offsite copies. There are free options too: a Community Edition of Backup & Replication that covers up to 10 workloads, and a free agent for backing up a single Windows PC to an external drive or NAS. Paid editions are quote-based and licensed per workload. The software runs on Windows servers, with agents for Windows and Linux. It suits businesses that run their own infrastructure and want one tool for VM, server and SaaS backups.

Best for: IT teams backing up VMs, servers and Microsoft 365 who want one widely supported backup platform.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Covers VMware, Hyper-V and Proxmox VMs, physical servers and NAS in one console
  • Free Community Edition for up to 10 workloads

  • Immutable backups and malware scanning before restore

Why people leave

  • Paid editions are quote-based with no public prices
  • Backup server runs on Windows, which Linux-only shops may not want
