About FreeFileSync

FreeFileSync compares two folders and copies only what changed, which makes it a common choice for backing up to an external drive or NAS and for keeping two machines' folders in step. You can run one-way mirror or update jobs, or a two-way sync that tracks deletions and conflicts, and preview every change before it runs. It can copy files that are in use on Windows through the Volume Shadow Copy Service, compare by content, and sync to network shares, FTP and SFTP and some cloud storage. Saved jobs run as batch files from a scheduler, and the companion RealTimeSync tool watches folders and triggers a sync when files change. The program is open source and free, funded by ads on the website and donations; a Donation Edition adds extras such as email notifications and a portable install. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. It is a manual, file-level tool, not versioned or encrypted backup.

Best for: People who want simple, previewable folder mirroring or two-way sync to a drive or NAS.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Free and open source on Windows, macOS and Linux

  • RealTimeSync can trigger jobs when folders change

Why people leave

  • No built-in versioned snapshots, deduplication or encryption
  • Some extras like email alerts need the Donation Edition
  • Interface is functional but cluttered for beginners
