Fitbit vs Peloton App
Updated November 2026 · AppBreakup editorial

Fitbit
Google's fitness trackers and health app for activity, sleep and heart data, now branded Google Health.

Peloton App
Instructor-led workout classes for cycling, running, strength and yoga, with or without Peloton equipment.
The short answer
Fitbit and the Peloton App approach fitness from opposite ends. Fitbit is a wearable plus a free health app (now the Google Health app) that tracks steps, heart rate and sleep all day, with an optional Premium AI coach from $9.99. Peloton is a subscription class library for guided workouts. Pick Fitbit for all-day tracking and sleep, Peloton for instructor-led sessions.
Fitbit or Peloton App: our take
Fitbit is hardware first. Its trackers range from screenless bands to smartwatches, and the companion app, which Google has renamed the Google Health app, records steps, distance, heart rate, cardio load, readiness, exercise sessions and detailed sleep with stages and a nightly score. The core app is free with a Fitbit or Pixel Watch, but without Google hardware it isn't much use. The Peloton App needs no hardware at all: it runs on your phone, tablet or TV and gives you live and on-demand classes across 15+ workout types from 55+ instructors, with cardio classes that work on any bike, treadmill or rower.
The paid layers overlap more than the free ones. Google Health Premium starts at $9.99 and adds a personal coach built with Gemini that writes and adjusts workout plans, explains sleep data and answers health questions; the current offer includes 3 months of coaching as a trial. Peloton is subscription only after its 30-day trial, with two tiers, App One and App+. The cheaper tier caps equipment cardio classes at three a month, and Peloton machine owners need a separate membership. Peloton has also added AI-built workout plans, but its value is still the classes and instructors rather than tracking.
On platforms, Fitbit's app runs on Android and iPhone; Peloton runs on iOS, Android, the web and TV apps. Fitbit users should be aware that the move from Fitbit accounts and branding to Google's means account and app changes. Peloton users should know there is no free tier to fall back on.
Pick Fitbit if you want something on your wrist that tracks activity and sleep every day, with coaching as an optional extra. Pick Peloton if what you lack is motivation and structure during workouts and you'd rather follow an instructor. The two combine well: a Fitbit to track the day and night, and Peloton for the sessions themselves.

About each app
What is Fitbit?
Fitbit started as a maker of step-counting wristbands and is now Google's line of fitness trackers, sold alongside the Pixel Watch. The companion app, which Google has renamed the Google Health app, records steps, distance, heart rate, cardio load, readiness, exercise sessions and detailed sleep including stages and a nightly sleep score. Cycle tracking, nutrition logging and health metrics are folded into the same place. The core app is free with a Fitbit or Pixel Watch, while the Google Health Premium subscription adds a personal coach built on Gemini that writes and adjusts workout plans, explains sleep data and answers health questions. It suits people who want an all-day wearable with strong sleep tracking and a simple app, rather than a dedicated GPS sports watch. Trackers range from screenless bands to full smartwatches, and the app runs on Android and iPhone. Existing users should note the move from Fitbit accounts and branding to Google's.
What is Peloton App?
The Peloton App is the subscription workout service behind Peloton's bikes and treadmills, sold separately so you can use it on your phone, tablet or TV without buying their hardware. It offers thousands of live and on-demand classes across cycling, running, strength, yoga, Pilates, rowing, meditation and stretching, taught by a large roster of named instructors. Cardio classes can be followed on any exercise bike, treadmill or rower, and the app tracks streaks, personal bests and progress over time. Newer additions include AI-built workout plans, official teams and a points-based recognition scheme. There are two app tiers: a cheaper one with unlimited floor, strength and outdoor workouts but a monthly cap on equipment cardio classes, and a higher one with unlimited cardio. Owners of Peloton machines need the separate All-Access Membership instead. It suits people who want guided, motivating classes rather than a GPS logger, and it runs on iOS, Android and the web plus TV apps. A 30-day free trial is offered to new members.
