Kahoot! vs Wayground
Updated November 2026 · AppBreakup editorial

Kahoot!
Game-based quiz platform for live and self-paced quizzes in classrooms, training and events.

Wayground
Classroom quiz, lesson and assessment platform for teachers, formerly known as Quizizz.
The short answer
Kahoot! suits teachers and trainers who want a live, competitive game-show quiz on a shared screen with a leaderboard. Wayground (formerly Quizizz) suits teachers who want students to work at their own pace through quizzes, lessons and homework, with exam mode and accessibility options. The biggest difference is format: Kahoot! races everyone together, Wayground lets each student move through questions individually.
Kahoot! or Wayground: our take
Kahoot! is built around the live game. A host shows questions on a shared screen, players join with a game PIN, link or QR code, and points for speed and accuracy feed a leaderboard with music. Quizzes can also be assigned as self-paced challenges with a deadline. Wayground started from the opposite end: students answer on their own devices at their own pace, whether the activity runs live in class or as homework. It also goes beyond quizzes, with interactive slide lessons, videos with embedded questions, flashcards and auto-graded homework, plus an exam mode with lockdown and tab-switch alerts and accessibility features such as read-aloud, dyslexia-friendly fonts and translation.
Both have large libraries of ready-made activities and AI generation. Kahoot! puts AI-generated quizzes, extra question types such as polls, puzzles and word clouds, team mode and detailed reports on paid plans; Wayground can draft a full activity from a topic, document or standard.
Pricing is where Kahoot! is more transparent but more complicated. It has a free account with no credit card, and separate plan families for schools, home and business. Published Pro plans start at $9 a month, billed annually, and run through $25 and $39 to $79 a month, billed annually, with live sessions of up to 2,000 participants on the standard tier. Wayground is free for individual teachers, while schools and districts buy paid plans by quote that add LMS, rostering and SSO integration and admin reporting.
For quick, energetic review games, corporate training or events where the shared-screen moment matters, Kahoot! is the stronger fit. For classroom routines where students need to work through material individually, do homework or sit formal assessments, Wayground covers more ground. Its rename from Quizizz means older guides and links still use the old name.

About each app
What is Kahoot!?
Kahoot! turns quizzes into a game show. A host puts multiple-choice and other question types on a shared screen, players join on their own devices with a game PIN, link or QR code, and points for speed and accuracy feed a live leaderboard with music. Quizzes can also be assigned as self-paced challenges with a deadline. Teachers can pick from a large library of ready-made kahoots or create their own, and paid plans add more question types such as polls, puzzles and word clouds, AI-generated quizzes, team mode, presentation slides and detailed reports. Kahoot! has separate plans for schools, for individuals and families, and for businesses under the Kahoot! 360 name, with participant limits that grow with the plan up to a few thousand live players. A free account covers basic hosting. It runs in the browser with iOS and Android apps. It is built for engagement and learning checks, not for open-ended meeting Q&A.
What is Wayground?
Wayground is the new name for Quizizz, the classroom activity platform many teachers use for quick quizzes and review games. A teacher builds or borrows an activity, then runs it live in class or assigns it as homework, and students answer on their own devices at their own pace rather than racing a shared screen. Beyond quizzes it covers interactive slide lessons, videos with embedded questions, flashcards and auto-graded homework, and it can generate a full activity with AI from a topic, document or standard. Assessments can run as a game or as a stricter exam with lockdown and tab-switch alerts, and accessibility options include read-aloud, dyslexia-friendly fonts and translation. Individual teachers can sign up free, while schools and districts buy paid plans by quote that add LMS, rostering and SSO integration plus admin reporting. It runs in the browser, with teacher and student apps for iOS and Android and a Chrome extension.
