The short answer

Pick Robinhood if you want a simple US app for stocks, options, futures and crypto, with an optional Gold subscription for a higher cash rate and an IRA match. Pick Webull if you want pro-style charts, Level 2 quotes, a screener, paper trading and a native desktop app. Both are commission-free; the main difference is simplicity versus analysis depth.

Robinhood or Webull: our take

Robinhood and Webull are both US brokerages that charge no commissions on stock and ETF trades and earn partly from payment for order flow. Robinhood's focus is a clean app where one account covers stocks and ETFs (fractional shares from $1), options, futures, crypto and prediction markets. Webull targets self-directed traders who want more tooling: detailed charts with drawing tools and indicators, Level 2 quotes, a stock screener, extended-hours trading and a paper-trading mode to test strategies without real money.

The paid tiers work differently. Robinhood Gold costs $5/month and adds a higher rate on uninvested cash, a 3% IRA contribution match, bigger instant deposits and research data. Webull's extras come from paid data subscriptions and a Premium tier, and some fees apply even though trading is commission-free, such as $0.50 per contract on certain index options and $75 per outgoing stock transfer. Incoming transfers to Webull are free.

On platforms, Robinhood runs on iOS, Android and the web, with Robinhood Legend as a browser-based desktop platform for active traders. Webull offers mobile, web and native Windows and Mac apps, plus an API for developers. For accounts, Webull lists cash and margin accounts and Traditional, Roth and Rollover IRAs; Robinhood offers IRAs, a managed-portfolio service and a cash card, but has fewer account types than full-service brokers. Both brokerages are SIPC members, and Robinhood notes crypto holdings are not SIPC or FDIC protected.

Choose Robinhood if you are new to investing or want stocks and crypto in one uncluttered app, and value the Gold cash rate and IRA match. Choose Webull if you trade actively, want to practise with paper trading, or need deeper charts and a desktop app, and do not mind a denser interface.

Which should you pick?

Choose Robinhood if…

  • US beginners and active traders who want stocks, options and crypto in one simple app

  • Stocks, options, futures and crypto in one account

Choose Webull if…

  • Self-directed US traders who want pro-style charts and extended hours without commissions
  • You need Windows and macOS, which Robinhood doesn't list
  • No commissions on US-listed stocks, ETFs and options
  • Advanced charts, Level 2 quotes and a stock screener

About each app

What is Robinhood?

Robinhood is a US brokerage app that helped make commission-free stock trading the norm. From one account you can buy stocks and ETFs (including fractional shares from $1), trade options and futures, buy and transfer crypto, and use prediction markets. Robinhood Legend is a browser-based desktop platform with more advanced charting for active traders, and there are IRAs, a managed-portfolio service and a cash card. The basic brokerage account is free; Robinhood Gold is a monthly subscription that adds a higher rate on uninvested cash, an IRA contribution match, bigger instant deposits and research data. The company makes money partly from payment for order flow and interest. Stock and fund accounts are SIPC members, while crypto holdings are not SIPC or FDIC protected. It runs on iOS, Android and the web, mainly for US customers.

What is Webull?

Webull is a US brokerage aimed at self-directed investors who want more tools than a basic investing app. It offers commission-free trading of US-listed stocks, ETFs and options, plus crypto, futures, OTC stocks, bonds and money market funds. Its strength is analysis: detailed charts with drawing tools and indicators, Level 2 quotes, a screener, extended-hours trading from early morning to evening, and a paper-trading mode for testing strategies with no money at risk. Cash and margin accounts are available alongside Traditional, Roth and Rollover IRAs. You can trade on mobile, the web or a desktop app, and there is an API for developers. Trading is free of commissions, but regulatory fees and some contract fees apply, and paid data subscriptions and a Premium tier add extras. Webull Financial is a FINRA and SIPC member.
