About MetaTrader 4
MetaTrader 4 is a trading platform from MetaQuotes that forex and CFD brokers give their clients. You download it for free, connect to your broker's server, and get live quotes, charts with technical indicators, one-click orders and alerts. Its best-known feature is automated trading: Expert Advisors written in the MQL4 language can trade for you, and the built-in Strategy Tester runs them against historical data. A marketplace sells robots and indicators, and the Signals service lets you copy other traders' positions. Apps for iPhone, iPad and Android and a web terminal let you trade away from your desk. MetaQuotes has since released MetaTrader 5, which adds stocks and futures, but MT4 is still updated and widely offered by forex brokers. The platform itself costs nothing; what you pay depends on your broker's spreads and fees, and paid robots and signals cost extra. MetaQuotes does not provide brokerage services itself.
Best for: Forex traders who want automated trading with Expert Advisors and wide broker support.

Pros and cons
What works
- Free download, offered by a very large number of brokers
- Expert Advisors and Strategy Tester for automated trading
- Huge library of third-party indicators and robots
- Desktop, mobile and web versions
Why people leave
- Mainly forex and CFDs, without the stock and futures markets of MetaTrader 5
- Charting looks dated next to TradingView
- You can only trade through a broker that supports it
