The short answer

Tableau suits analyst teams that want polished, interactive dashboards and can budget for per-user licences. Zoho Analytics suits small and mid-size businesses, especially those on Zoho CRM or Books, that want affordable self-service BI with published prices and an AI assistant. The biggest difference is cost and audience: Tableau is a sizeable investment aimed at dedicated analysts, Zoho is priced for smaller teams.

Tableau or Zoho Analytics: our take

Tableau's strength is its drag-and-drop canvas: analysts connect to spreadsheets, databases or warehouses and build rich charts, maps and dashboards that others filter and explore, without code. Work is authored in Tableau Desktop (Windows and Mac) or the browser and published to Tableau Cloud or to self-managed Tableau Server on Windows or Linux. Zoho Analytics pulls data from 500+ sources, with especially tight links to other Zoho apps and ready-made dashboards for common business apps. Reports can be built by drag and drop or by asking Zia, Zoho's AI assistant, questions in plain language, and data prep, AutoML and Python notebooks cover more technical work.

Pricing differs sharply. Tableau's paid plans are licensed per user by role and get expensive as more people need access. Its free route, Tableau Public and the free Tableau Desktop Public Edition, publishes workbooks for anyone to see, so it suits portfolios and open data, not private figures. Zoho has a free plan for 2 users and 10,000 rows, a Standard plan at $60 a month for 5 users and Premium at $145 a month (both billed monthly), with extra users from $8 per user/month. Paid tiers cap data rows, with more sold as add-ons, and there is a 15-day trial with no card.

Both can be self-hosted: Tableau through Tableau Server, Zoho through an on-premises edition. Tableau has a large community gallery and plenty of training material; Zoho's interface packs in many settings and takes time to learn.

Pick Tableau if you have dedicated analysts and want the most flexible visual exploration, and the per-user budget is there. Pick Zoho Analytics if you are a smaller business, already use Zoho apps, or want private dashboards on a free or low-cost plan.

About each app

What is Tableau?

Tableau is one of the best-known business intelligence tools. You connect it to spreadsheets, databases or cloud data warehouses, then drag fields onto a canvas to build charts, maps and dashboards that others can filter and explore. Analysts usually author in Tableau Desktop or in the browser, then publish to Tableau Cloud (the hosted service) or Tableau Server (installed on your own Windows or Linux machines) so colleagues can view and interact with the work. Tableau is owned by Salesforce and is aimed mainly at companies with dedicated data analysts, though its drag-and-drop approach is approachable for non-programmers too. Paid plans are licensed per user by role, and the full product is a sizeable investment for small teams. There is also a free route: Tableau Public lets anyone publish visualizations to a public gallery, and the free Tableau Desktop Public Edition can save workbooks locally, but anything published there is visible to everyone, so it suits portfolios and open data rather than private company figures.

What is Zoho Analytics?

Zoho Analytics is a self-service BI and reporting tool. It pulls data from files, databases, warehouses and hundreds of business apps, with especially tight links to the rest of the Zoho suite such as Zoho CRM and Books, and comes with pre-built dashboards for many of those apps. Users build reports with drag and drop or ask questions in plain language through Zia, Zoho's AI assistant, which can also generate dashboards and narrated insights. Data prep, AutoML and Python notebooks cover more technical work. It suits small and mid-size businesses that want capable BI without enterprise pricing, particularly those already on Zoho. There is a small free plan and paid tiers priced by users and data rows, with a free trial. It runs in the cloud with mobile apps, and an on-premises edition is available. The interface packs in a lot of options, so it takes time to learn.
