About Amazon Q Developer

Amazon Q Developer is AWS's generative AI assistant for software development. Its IDE plugins for VS Code, JetBrains IDEs, Visual Studio and Eclipse offer inline suggestions, chat and agentic coding, and a CLI adds completions and natural-language-to-shell commands in the terminal. It also answers questions about your AWS account in the console and has transformation tools for chores such as upgrading old Java versions. Its advantage is AWS context: it knows AWS services, IAM and best practices better than general assistants. There is a perpetual free tier with monthly limits and a Pro tier billed per user per month with higher limits, admin controls and IP indemnity. One thing to know before adopting it: AWS has announced it will end support for the Q Developer IDE plugins on 30 April 2027 and points users to Kiro, its newer agentic IDE, so new teams should weigh that roadmap. It suits teams that build mostly on AWS.

Best for: Teams building on AWS who want an assistant that understands their cloud setup.
