About Apache OpenOffice

Apache OpenOffice is the continuation of the original OpenOffice.org project, now maintained by the Apache Software Foundation. It provides a word processor (Writer), spreadsheet (Calc), presentations (Impress), drawing (Draw), database (Base) and formula editor (Math), uses the ODF format natively and can open Microsoft Office files. It is free, released under the Apache License 2.0, and still available for Windows, macOS and Linux in many languages. People still search for it because of its familiar name, but development is slow: releases are mostly maintenance and security fixes, and most of the community and new features moved to LibreOffice years ago. That means weaker compatibility with modern .docx and .xlsx files and an interface that hasn't changed much in a long time. It remains a workable option on older machines or where it is already installed, but most new users are better served by LibreOffice or ONLYOFFICE.

Best for: Users already on OpenOffice who need a free suite that keeps working.
