About AWS CodeCommit

AWS CodeCommit is a managed Git hosting service that keeps repositories inside your AWS account, with access controlled through IAM, encryption at rest and in transit, and integration with CodeBuild, CodePipeline and other AWS developer tools. It supports pull requests, approval rules, notifications and triggers, but it is deliberately basic compared with GitHub or GitLab: there is no built-in issue tracker, wiki or rich code review experience. AWS stopped onboarding new customers in 2024 and then reversed course, returning the service to general availability for new customers in late 2025, so it remains an option for organisations that want repositories under the same governance as the rest of their AWS estate. Pricing includes a free tier of five active users per month that does not expire, then a monthly charge per extra active user with included storage and requests. It is managed through the AWS console, CLI and standard Git clients.

Best for: AWS-heavy organisations that want private Git repos governed by IAM.
