About AWS CodePipeline

AWS CodePipeline orchestrates release pipelines on AWS. A pipeline is a series of stages and actions that pull source from GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, CodeCommit, S3 or ECR, build and test with CodeBuild or other providers such as Jenkins, and deploy with CodeDeploy, ECS, CloudFormation, Elastic Beanstalk, Lambda and more, with manual approval steps where needed. Because it uses IAM, CloudWatch and EventBridge, it fits neatly into accounts that are already governed through AWS, and infrastructure-as-code tools like CDK can define pipelines alongside the rest of your stack. It is less pleasant as a developer tool than dedicated CI services: the console is utilitarian, and debugging failed actions often means jumping between several AWS services. Pricing is pay as you go with no upfront fees: V2 pipelines are billed per action execution minute and V1 pipelines per active pipeline, with a free tier. It is used through the AWS console, CLI and APIs.

Best for: AWS-centric teams that want deployment pipelines governed inside their AWS accounts.
