About Consul

Consul is HashiCorp's service networking tool. Services register themselves in a central catalog, with health checks, and other services find them through Consul's DNS interface or HTTP API. On top of that registry it can run a service mesh: sidecar proxies and gateways that encrypt traffic between services, enforce service-to-service permissions (called intentions) and split or route traffic for canary and blue/green releases. It also has a key/value store that teams often use for configuration. Its main difference from Kubernetes-only meshes is reach: one Consul deployment can span virtual machines, Kubernetes clusters, ECS, Lambda and Nomad across several data centres or clouds. The servers keep state consistent with the Raft protocol and agents share membership through gossip. It's aimed at platform and infrastructure teams running many services. The community edition is free to download and run yourself; Consul Enterprise adds paid features for governance, multi-tenancy and scale. It runs as a single binary on Linux, macOS and Windows.

Best for: Platform teams that need service discovery and a mesh across VMs, Kubernetes and several clouds.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Works across VMs, Kubernetes, ECS and Nomad from one control plane
  • Service discovery over plain DNS needs no app changes
  • Built-in key/value store and health checks
  • Single binary that is easy to try in developer mode

Why people leave

  • Source-available under the Business Source License since 2023, not OSI open source
  • Multi-tenancy and governance features need the paid Enterprise edition
  • Running a Raft server cluster adds operational work
