About Google Cloud Service Mesh
Cloud Service Mesh is Google Cloud's managed service mesh, which merged the earlier Anthos Service Mesh and Traffic Director products. On Google Kubernetes Engine it uses the open-source Istio APIs, so existing Istio configuration largely carries over, while Google runs the control plane and, in the managed setup, the Envoy data plane too, handling upgrades, scaling and security patches. On Compute Engine it uses Google Cloud service routing APIs and can serve VMs with Envoy or with proxyless gRPC applications in Go, C++, Java or Python. Services authenticate each other with mutual TLS, traffic metrics and logs flow into Google Cloud's monitoring with ready-made dashboards and SLOs, and the components are built with FIPS 140-2 validated cryptography. An in-cluster control plane exists for Kubernetes outside Google Cloud. It's billed as part of Google Cloud usage. It suits teams already on GKE who like Istio's model but don't want to operate it themselves.
Best for: GKE teams that want Istio-compatible mesh features without running the control plane.
