About Linkerd

Linkerd is a service mesh for Kubernetes that puts simplicity first. Install it, add its proxy to your workloads, and every TCP connection between meshed pods gets mutual TLS with no configuration, along with success-rate, latency and request-volume metrics for each workload. It also handles latency-aware load balancing, retries, timeouts, rate-limit-aware balancing and cross-cluster failover. Instead of Envoy, Linkerd uses its own small proxy written in Rust, which keeps memory and CPU use low and avoids whole classes of memory-safety bugs. It was the first service mesh to graduate in the CNCF, and the code is Apache 2.0. Linkerd was created by Buoyant, which sells Buoyant Enterprise for Linkerd with support; the open-source project itself publishes edge releases. It's a good fit for teams that want encryption and observability between services without learning a large mesh, as long as their workloads run on Kubernetes.

Best for: Kubernetes teams that want mTLS and service metrics with minimal setup and overhead.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Mutual TLS between pods with zero configuration
  • Small Rust proxy with low resource use
  • Few custom resources and a gentle getting-started path
  • Per-workload golden metrics out of the box

Why people leave

  • Focused on Kubernetes; not a fit for VM-heavy estates
  • Fewer advanced traffic features than Istio
  • Stable release builds come through Buoyant's commercial distribution
