About Istio
Istio is the best-known open-source service mesh. It sits between the services in a Kubernetes cluster (and, with more setup, VMs) and handles the networking concerns that would otherwise live in application code: mutual TLS encryption and identity, authorization policies, retries and timeouts, traffic splitting for canary releases, and request metrics and traces. Historically it did this by injecting an Envoy sidecar proxy next to every pod. Its newer ambient mode drops the sidecars in favour of a per-node zero-trust tunnel for Layer 4, adding Envoy waypoint proxies only where Layer 7 features are needed, which cuts resource use. Istio is a graduated CNCF project, licensed under Apache 2.0 and free to run yourself. Many cloud and Kubernetes vendors offer one-click installs or fully managed Istio, which is often how larger companies pay for it. It suits platform teams that want a broad feature set and are prepared for a steeper learning curve.
