Continue has been acquired. Acquired by Cursor in June 2026; hosted service wound down, open-source code still available.

About Continue

Continue was an open-source AI code assistant for VS Code and JetBrains IDEs, and later a CLI called cn. It offered agent mode for development tasks, chat about code, inline edits and autocomplete, and its appeal was flexibility: you configured which models to use, including local ones through Ollama, and shared custom assistants, rules and prompts through a hub. It was a popular open-source alternative to GitHub Copilot. In June 2026 Cursor acquired the company; the hosted service and paid plans were wound down and users were given a deadline to export their data. The open-source code remains available on GitHub under the Apache 2.0 licence and the extensions can still be configured with your own models, but you shouldn't expect new features or support from the original team. Listed here because many developers still search for it; people starting fresh should look at actively maintained open-source agents such as Cline, Kilo Code or OpenCode.

Best for: Existing users who want to keep running a self-configured open-source assistant.
