About FreeMind
FreeMind is one of the original open-source mind mapping programs, written in Java and still downloadable for Windows, macOS and Linux. It offers fast keyboard-driven editing, one-click folding and unfolding of branches, icons, clickable links to files and websites, and export to HTML with folding, and its .mm file format became a de facto exchange format that many other mind map apps can import. It has been downloaded millions of times and is still used by people who value its simplicity. However, development has been slow for many years and most active work moved to Freeplane, a fork that keeps compatibility while adding many more features. FreeMind is free under the GPL, but its interface looks old, it needs Java, and it has no cloud, mobile or collaboration features, so most new users are better served by Freeplane or a modern app.
Best for: People who want a very simple, free desktop mind mapper and don't need new features.
